Bonjour, Marseille! (8)

No better way to start the day than coffee overlooking the Vieux Port.  We were keen for mode 'relax,' as all that queuing and travelling the previous day had taken it out of us!  Plus, we'd pretty much all managed to get colds.  Therefore, some winter sun did not go amiss.

La Terrasse du Fouquet, Vieux Port, Marseille

Next on the list was a trip on the tourist train around the Corniche (seaside road, with great views out over the bay), and up to the beautiful Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, which watches over Marseille from atop a nearby hill.  I'd been here before, but was left with a lasting impression of the luxurious decoration of the basilica's interior, the smell of candle wax, and the views out over the city.  This time, the former two were just as impressive, but we couldn't fully enjoy the latter due to wind almost strong enough to blow us over!  Mum was in hysterics later, as she re-read the insightful Lonely Planet write-up: "Be blown away by the celestial views and knockout 19th century architecture..."

Looking up at the Basilica from the Vieux Port.

Don't be fooled by the sun... This is how cold I was.

We needed warming up, and it came in the form of pizza from Le Peano, which was cooked in an oven which was in the dining area!  You certainly knew that it was authentic.

Macarons... how I miss you!
After a spot of shopping in the Rue de la République, and a macaron run, it was destination railway station (via metro, the taxi man from the day before told us it was the best way, when you have a deadline) and off to Nice!  We were really lucky not to have our train delayed, as the station was full of rather peeved travellers asking where their trains were.  We were really unlucky, however, to have an undesirable, noisy, rude man in the same carriage as us.  But, I suppose you can't have everything!
